Where the Chemistry Happens…
We are seeking an Associate Chemist to join our Analytics and Materials Characterization team in Beachwood, OH. Our mission in Analytics and Materials Characterization is to partner with our customers to increase knowledge. We accomplish this by providing high quality, reliable data and solutions. The X-ray Diffraction (XRD) laboratory is high volume and fast paced, providing accurate elemental analysis rapidly to the research organization at our Beachwood OH site. We have a vacancy in the XRD laboratory that we need to fill in order to support the research of BASF scientists in the fields of heterogeneous catalysis and battery materials research.
Associate Chemist (1700523) – Beachwood, OH
Operating in a fast-paced environment, you will support the research of BASF heterogeneous catalysts and battery materials by x-ray diffraction. This includes supporting BASF pilot plant and production facilities as research discoveries are translated into products. The support involves the generation of critical information such as lattice parameters, crystallite size, and phase quantity which help guide BASF scientists in their discovery efforts.
Formula for Success: You Will…
Operate and maintain all X-Ray Diffraction analysis and preparation equipment.
Identify crystalline and semi-crystalline materials made by BASF scientists.
Use classical powder x-ray diffraction techniques or Rietveld refinement techniques to obtain lattice parameters, crystallite size values, or phase quantities in support of research projects.
Train battery materials personnel in the use of lab instrumentation and assist them with data collection and analysis where necessary.
Provide concise reports, documenting, interpreting results, and communicating (written and oral) of basic and moderately complex X-Ray diffraction results with support.
Interact and engage with scientists, engineers, and manufacturing associates working on new-product development and manufacturing support.
Perform maintenance and calibration activities required to maintain ISO compliance.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent
BS in Chemistry, Materials Science or a related technical discipline with direct lab experience.
Expected to have academic knowledge in general chemistry (knowledge of inorganic chemistry, catalysis and battery materials would be a plus).
Experience working with powder X-Ray Diffraction instrumentation and software, and sample preparation.
Experience with ICDD and ICSD databases.
Knowledge of Reitveld methods used to refine X-Ray diffraction data.
Familiarity with Topas and PANalytical Highscore and PANanlytical data viewer.
Familiarity with heterogeneous catalysis and/or battery materials.
