We have a great opportunity for a Technology Leader, Ester and Compound Lubricants, to join our team.

The BASF global business unit, Fuel and Lubricant Solutions , develops, produces and markets performance chemicals for the worldwide automotive and oil industries. The business is influenced mainly by the trends toward global motorization and the further development of engines designed to cut fuel consumption.

Offerings cover fuel performance packages, refinery additives, polyisobutenes, engine coolants (Glysantin® brand) and brake fluids as well as lubricant additives, compounded lubricants, synthetic base stocks and components for metalworking fluids. The business unit has its main facilities in Ludwigshafen, Germany, Cincinnati and Florham Park in the USA, Nanjing and Shanghai in China, as well as Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Technology Leader, Ester and Compound Lubricants (1701341)

The Technology Leader for Ester and Compounded Lubricants will support the innovation/technology pipeline for ester base stocks in North America (NA) with a strong liaison to global marketing and global technology management base stocks. Activities to include new product development for base esters.

Formula for Success: You Will…

  • Understand the Structure/Property relationship of esters and coordinate technical approval programs for new ester base stocks.

  • Identify and evaluate new cost attractive raw materials for all NA esters

  • Implement the technology, including pilot and plant introductions of new esters into the Cincinnati, and Jinshan ester plants (directing pilot plant scale up activities and laboratory work).

  • Conduct and direct Lab support for technical trouble shooting of the existing processes in the Cincinnati ester plant.

  • Initiate and support R&D activities for process improvements, process optimization and new processes.

  • Identify, lead, coordinate and support process improvements and process optimization to improve safety, increase capacity, enhance quality and reduce cost.

  • Provide second tier troubleshooting support for Technical issues, customer complaints and develop rework procedures.

  • Provide Technical support for customer complaints in partnership with the BASF NCM Group

  • Interact with Global Plants and provide advice as a Technology Expert on stand-alone site processes. Coordinate and share knowledge with the local and global technology centers including Benchmarking.

  • Identify opportunities and tools to improve plant performance (i.e. OAE) in partnership with plant Engineers, Operations Manager, and Asset Manager.

  • Participate in best practice sharing process to ensure technical expertise is leveraged globally.

  • Act as technical contact for customer audits, product qualification and Toll manufacturing including audits.

  • Own supplier qualification for existing and new raw materials.

  • Support Process Hazard Analysis activities from technology point-of-view

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry Degree. Other scientific disciplines can be considered. Master Degree or higher would be a benefit.

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in Manufacturing and/or Process Development.

  • Understanding and experience in Process safety.

  • Leadership experience is required. Supervisor experience is preferred

  • 10% international/domestic travel

We Also Look for…

  • In-depth knowledge of process, production, safety, support systems for production processes and development lab procedures.

  • The ability to interact with several global departments and international sites, handle troubleshooting, evaluating new products, raw materials, and processes.

  • Experience in Ester synthesis in either a laboratory or pilot plant highly desired.
