Where the Chemistry Happens…
We are seeking Counsel to join our Intellectual Property team. The Intellectual Property Counsel will support various research & development and business groups in order to support BASF Corporation’s global initiatives for a broad range of business groups. The role will advise various R&D and business functions to support both technical developments and address contract needs related to IP issues in order to deliver IP related support across various BASF business groups.
Intellectual Property Counsel – Florham Park, NJ or Wyandotte, MI (1700357)
You will be responsible for a broad range of intellectual property matters, focused primarily on transactional matters. You will be self-motivated to maintain awareness of legal and technical issues relevant to the assigned clients, as well as having a strong interest in the underlying business, to provide pragmatic, cost-effective, business-friendly solutions to the IP issues that arise and further support driving change throughout the R&D and business organizations.
Formula for Success: You Will…
Contract and Transactional Work
Drafting, negotiating, implementing, and interpreting a variety of intellectual property agreements, including chemistry related secrecy agreements, material transfer agreements, licenses, technology transfer agreements, research collaboration contracts with both public and private sector institutions, joint development agreements and other agreements having a significant intellectual property component.
Work with R&D and business unit leaders on both a regional and global level to ensure proper agreements are identified and put in place.
Other IP-Related Legal Work
Provide day-to-day IP guidance and counseling in North America to R&D, General Legal, Tax, and relevant business functions, both line management and senior management, expanding advice to global team members and management as may be required.
Develop and provide IP training in coordination with other members of BASF's international patent and general legal teams.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent
Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…
Juris Doctorate degree, licensed to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction and before USPTO; minimum 2 years overall legal experience
2 years of IP transactional work experience, including technology transfer; licensing; joint collaboration, development, acquisition and other complex agreements having a significant IP component; and IP due diligence at a large law firm;
Ability to provide quality and timely work product with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment
Ability to handle a significant amount of work to protect innovations through intellectual property in a budget constrained environment
Ability to convey strong business judgment and social skills for the role in mediating between competing business interests
Strong communication skills with all levels in the organization
