Entry level position in the production of surfactant chemicals. This position assists higher-level operators in all phases of production work to acquire additional skills to complete a competency based training program for Chemical C Operator. Common examples of daily job tasks are the following: weighing raw material, handling acids and caustics, unloading hazardous raw materials from railcars, transferring products from vessels to storage tanks, tanks, etc. drumming, operating a fork truck to transfer material, and performing housekeeping items.
Job requires a moderate degree of manual dexterity to operate valves, pumps, scales, switches, etc. Minor maintenance work, such as adjusting pumps and valves, requires skill and dexterity in use of small hand tools. Operates forklift truck and handles drumming of product. This all requires sufficient manual skills. Operation covers complex reactors where speed and production, as well as quality, depend on manual skill. 70% of the job requires standing, walking, and climbing to observe and operate controls valves, drumming of products, etc. 30% of the job requires manual material handling, recording data, etc. Must be able to wear a full face respirator and be able to wear a fully encapsulated level A protection suit. In addition, bending, stooping, lifting up to 50lbs. routinely and 60lbs on occasion, climbing ladders, and working at various heights is required.
Type of work involves complex chemical reactions and operations with various types of equipment located on many levels, which requires a high degree of concentration during various phases of the operation. Operating procedures vary batch-to-batch and product-to-product and must be carefully followed to produce on spec material.

Operates valves, manipulates switches, etc., to complete the following:
Drum line operation including labeling and inventory management
Charging raw material to process vessels from drums, totes.
Charging raw material to process vessels from storage tanks through meters.
Load and unload railcars/tankers to and from storage tanks and process vessels
Weigh, measure, or on some other basis, obtain predetermined amounts of raw materials for product batches;
Transfer (charge) raw materials;
Drums and/or transfers finished product to storage area
- Operates forklift truck, drum truck, and yard tractor.
- Notifies shift supervisor or team leader of any unusual situation that may require attention.
- Keeps assigned equipment and work area clean and orderly. Completes a daily housekeeping area.
- Practices safety at all times. Follows BASF’s safety rules and promotes their observance in the performance of job duties.
- Conducts visual inspection of all equipment to determine status before operating
- Cleans vessels, pumps and process lines to avoid product contamination.
- Is a teammate on emergency crew for emergency response?
- Responsible for the proper handling of RCRA hazardous wastes generated by the site as directed by the Production Supervisor, Operations Manager or EHS coordinator.
- Follows BASF Corporations site and corporate policies.
- Performs other work as required and/or assigned.
Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent
High School education or equivalent
Prefer at least an associate’s degree from a recognized technical/community college Experience
Possess the ability to work 12-hour rotating day/night shifts (06:45 AM to 07:00 PM and 06:45PM to 07:00AM) and required overtime
Willingness and ability to work outside in various weather conditions and perform the physical requirements of the job such as; wearing a full face respirator, wearing a fully encapsulated level A protection suit, bending, stooping, lifting up to 50lbs. routinely and 60lbs on occasion, climbing ladders, and working at various heights is required
A minimum of 2 years in a batch chemical environment is preferred. Knowledge/Skills
The individual will be very safety conscious when working with and around chemicals, show initiative, have excellent attention to detail, be results oriented and customer focused, possess good communication skills, and possess the ability to work in a team environment.
The individual must also be able to prioritize tasks and be self-motivated.
