Where the Chemistry Happens…
The position is being created to strengthen the Bio-based Chemicals and Biocontrol Research Team in Tarrytown. The team is an integral part of BASF’s White Biotechnology Research within the global Bioscience Research platform.
The team works closely with other research teams, development teams, and business units of BASF, inside and outside the US. In addition, the team maintains and supports numerous collaborations with non-BASF partners, incl. universities and other research organizations.
The Strain Development Scientist will develop and analyze microbial strains for production of bio-based chemicals within the Microbiology & Industrial Biotechnology Research Group. The successful candidate will also be responsible for maintaining automation equipment, running automation equipment, and related method development. The individual will be a self-starter able to work well on his/her own and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Formula for Success: You Will…
· Engineer yeast and bacterial strains using microbiological methods, Molecular Biology, Molecular Evolution, and other techniques to improve microbial metabolic pathways.
· Analyze and characterize microbial strains and critically evaluate data for desired properties (e.g., to identify targets for strain improvement).
· Run automation equipment such as liquid handling robots, develop and script methods on these instruments, and drive the transfer of methods from manual to automated execution.
· Actively participate in project and technical meetings to critically evaluate projects, as well as in cross-functional teams and product development teams with business units.
· Maintain laboratory documentation in accordance with required scientific, regulatory, and intellectual property requirements.
· Prepare scientific reports and presentations as required.

Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…
BS degree in Microbiology. Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences or a similar discipline with 2 years of industry experience required OR Master’s degree in Microbiology, Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, or a similar discipline with at least 1 year of industry experience required.
Hands-on experience in Molecular Biology and Metabolic Engineering techniques for bacteria and yeast required.
Experience in running state-of-the-art biotechnology automation and high throughput equipment.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and teamwork and communication capabilities.
Experience with developing new methods for automation equipment preferred.
Familiarity automating manual wet lab tasks is a plus
Background in Bioinformatics and hands-on experience in the field.
Experience with Synthetic Biology and strain design preferred.
Strong assay development skills.
