Where the Chemistry Happens…
Advanced Materials & Systems Research is the BASF global research platform supporting operating units and businesses with discovery and development of new materials and processes required from markets and customers. It is part of the global competency center for research in the field of structural materials and systems based on thermoplastics and duromers. Our Scientists create chemistry and processes for innovative materials, composites and systems based on polycondensation and polyaddition chemistry, as well as thermoset chemistry. Our main partner is the Performance Materials (PM) business unit focusing on the Transportation, Construction, and Consumer industry segments.
As a global research unit RAP has research activities established in Asia (Shanghai), North America (Wyandotte, Buddlake) and Europe (Ludwigshafen, Lemförde).The work conducted by the polymer processing research unit supports both customer-driven growth as well as supports Operational Excellence within BASF units producing thermoplastic and thermoset products.
The job is being created for the conception, planning and execution of (sub-) projects in the field of thermoplastic polymers and composite processing.The position offers the opportunity to work with various technologies on thermoplastic materials and thermosetting systems in laboratory, pilot and production scale within BASF and development partners.The purpose of the position is to provide a seamless transition of results from laboratory scale to eventual production.The role further expands to cooperation with product development teams as well as university collaborations.

• Proposes, plans and executes challenging and cutting-edge R&D projects/topics in the field of polymer & composite processing
• Contributes to product development projects with appropriate process design and processing parameter sets
• Serves as member of the global material processing competence community
• Actively drives knowledge transfer from other regions to North America and executes global projects
• Establishes an outside reputation as a competent professional in the area of polymer & composite processing
• Specifies, installs, and starts-up new equipment as needed to support new product/process development
• Communicates ideas, results and recommendations by means of lab reports and presentations
• Maintains a professional presence in BASF's research community through active publications, presentations and fostering University relationships

Ingredients for Success … What We Look for in You..
PhD degree in polymer science, material science, chemical engineering or plastics technology (recent PhD Graduates are encouraged to apply) required
Experience in extrusion and compounding technology, including up- and down-stream technologies (twin screw extruder, single screw extruder, multi screw extruder, kneader, feeding, granulation, etc.), polymer processing technologies (injection molding, sheet extrusion, etc.), polymer material science, thermosetting material systems processes (RTM, infusion, pultrusion, SMC, LFT)
Capability of taking key/lead roles in global project teams with good project management and communications skills
Ability to perform tasks individually with minimum supervision as well as in a team setting
