R&D Breeding Assistant (Breeder-Hybrid ) (2002999) – Beaver Crossing, NE

Where the Chemistry Happens…

This position will be responsible for supporting the winter wheat hybrid breeding program. The incumbent will assist in establishing and evaluating wheat research plots, chemical application of male-sterility agent to hybrid production blocks, data collection and analyses. Responsibilities also include but may not be limited to; assisting with establishing isolation infrastructure, supporting greenhouse activities, including; crossing wheat parents, interacting with, and managing contingent labor, processing seed, participating in planting and harvesting activities. Additional activities include supporting pathology and other breeding teams as possible and necessary.

Formula for Success: You Will…

  • MS in Plant Breeding, Agronomy, horticulture or related field or B.S. in agronomy, horticulture, or related fields and 2 years of experience.

  • Proven ability to interact with multiple team members, ability to direct and train multiple full-time and/or contract employees; ability to learn and document new techniques/protocols.

  • Current knowledge of, and practical skills in agronomic field activities.

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain Pesticide Applicator’s License within six months of hire.

  • Individual must have extremely good organization skills, interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work in a team environment.

  • Aptitude for managing multiple overlapping tasks simultaneously.

  • Experience working with wheat crops and an understanding of Stewardship and Biosafety practices necessary for maintaining plant genetic integrity throughout the seed production processes.

  • Assist with all aspects of hybrid production, development of A/B-Lines, data collection, seed processing, field planting and harvesting of winter wheat material.

  • Assist with greenhouse planting, transplanting, leaf sampling, crossing and harvesting activities.

  • Utilize computers/tablets, GPS modules/systems, internal database system to collect, curate, archive, and manage data appropriately.
