Associate Scientist – 2000454 - Charlotte, NC

Where the Chemistry Happens

We are seeking an Associate Scientist to work in the Dispersions & Resins (ED) business unit as part of our Charlotte, NC company site.

This position has the primary responsibility of supporting the development of functional polymer dispersions for the architectural coatings market.

Formula for Success

  • Collaborate with Research Scientist and technicians to run projects with the aim to advance technical understanding of experimental polymer and paint performance intended for commercialization into the architectural coatings market . It will be necessary for individual to be able to design and test new application test methods, understand the impact of variations in both internal and customer-based test methods and internally publish methods.

  • Individual will need to be able to independently: Setup their own experiments within the scope set by the research scientist. Make keen observations and be cognizant of opportunities. Adjust experimentation and problem solve as needed. Report results in a coherent manner

  • Role will require reporting study conclusions and project milestones to Research Scientist, Project stakeholders and customers. Individual will need to refine and develop their formulation skills by understanding more deeply the chemistries, raw materials and potential interactions within formulations. It will be expected that the individual can develop or improve formulations.

  • Perform maintenance and calibration activities required to maintain ISO compliance. Serve within a laboratory team in such activities as equipment repairs, including interfacing with manufacturers, contractors and site facilities.

  • Time management skills, strong work ethic and self-motivation are a must. Individual needs to be able to understand on their own the priority of projects and be responsive and reflexive to changing demands without instruction. Individual will play a strong role in providing guidance and training to junior staff on routine work. Strong team participation, collaboration, and communication within the team and potentially with customers / business is a must. Generate ideas that improve the safety, efficiency and overall effectiveness of the laboratory and its team.

  • High School Diploma or GED and 6 years practical laboratory experience in a chemical related field, or an Associates Degree in a chemistry related field and 4 years practical laboratory experience in a chemical related field, or Bachelors degree in a chemistry related field with practical laboratory experience in a chemical related field. Use of basic computer skills and be comfortable with MS Outlook, MS Word and MS Excel. Experience in the testing of coatings for various applications. Must possess good oral and written communication skills
