Research Technician II – Lab Scale Reactor Operator - Charlotte, NC

We Create Chemistry

The Research Technician will be part of the N-EDN/T Process Development team, based in Charlotte, NC to support the overall success of the Dispersions & Resins business by researching and developing new products in an industrial laboratory setting. The Dispersions & Resins business of BASF develops, produces, and markets a range of high-quality resins and dispersions worldwide. These raw materials are used in formulations for coatings and paints, printing and packaging products, construction chemicals, adhesives, fiber bonding, nonwovens, and paper manufacturing.

Reporting to the Emulsion Laboratory Coordinator and in collaboration with the Process Development Scientists, the Research Technician will work in an industrial laboratory and be responsible for operating the emulsions equipment to create quality prototype samples in a safe, timely and professional fashion. The technician will also ensure that the emulsions equipment and work environment remain operational, uncluttered, and safe.

Formula for Success:

  • Leveraging your hands-on experience operating technical equipment safely, such as lab reactors and analytical instrumentation you will produce and evaluate polymer dispersion prototypes and provide direct data support to BASF Scientists.

  • Demonstrate the highest level of safety and consideration for others working in the Polymerization Lab when operating polymerization equipment.

  • Demonstrating your effective communication skills and attention to detail, you will follow procedures, capture operation details, and alert Lab Coordinators and Scientists on deviations in procedures and non-conforming operation.

  • Demonstrate a sense of ownership for Polymerization Lab assets and strong teamwork with co-workers.

  • Work independently, developing, planning, and executing day-to-day equipment operations as established in the standard operating procedures.

  • Display capability and willingness to trouble shoot and repair assigned equipment, with the support of our Laboratory Coordinators and our Maintenance Team.

  • Support digitalization efforts by using digital tools.

  • Be responsible for the filling and transfer of hazardous and non-hazardous samples and raw materials: From small bottles up to drum quantities.

Knowledge and Experience

  • High School diploma and 2 years relevant experience is required or bachelor’s degree in science

  • Polymer synthesis, processing, and testing equipment.

  • Qualified individual will be capable of working in a lab for much of the day with some physical activity required.

  • Experience handling hazardous chemicals, mechanical equipment and computerized systems.

  • Capable of working in a structured environment where activities are governed by written procedures yet flexible enough to work in an environment of scientific experimentation.

  • Effectively communicate using oral & written skills with scientists, peers, and management to ensure that information is exchanged at all levels
