Formulation Additives, Technical Specialist I – Charlotte, NC

The Dispersions & Resins business of BASF develops, produces and markets a range of high-quality resins, additives, colorants and polymer dispersions worldwide. These raw materials are used in formulations for architectural paints, industrial, wood and automotive coatings, printing inks, construction coatings and adhesives, and paper coatings. This position will be a full-time lab position to fulfill the objectives of completing Technical Service projects in the Additives Industrial lab segment (but will also work in automotive and wood coatings areas). Responsibilities will be to execute projects on time to support customer new business opportunities, complete competitive benchmarking of additives in the above listed markets and investigate customer initiated product NCM’s, and organize project outputs for the Technical Specialist I to take back to customers.
Formula for Success
In collaboration with Technical Specialist I draft and carry out laboratory projects in General Industrial segment. Draw conclusions from the project and define next steps. Compile and organize lab data/results in a manner acceptable for external customers.
Along side the Technical Specialist I draft and carry out laboratory projects in Wood segment. Draw conclusions from the project and define next steps. Compile and organize lab data/results in a manner acceptable for external customers.
In the role you will partner with the Technical Specialist I draft and carry out laboratory projects in Transportation (automotive) Coatings segment. Draw conclusions from the project and define next steps. Compile and organize lab data/results in a manner acceptable for external customers.
Generate technical value propositions on upcoming new Additive product launches
Execute projects that support BASF internal Innovation ideas (value proposition development) and support the Global Industry Teams in each of the 3 market segments mentioned above
Provide customer ready demonstration panels (mostly spray applied) in each of above market segments to support product Launches of new additives
Advance the lab capabilities in support of Industrial, Wood, and Transportation Coatings market by developing standard work practices in each market that allow the lab to work autonomously with minimal supervision
Bachelors degree in chemistry or engineering
8-12 yrs direct experience in water based General Industrial Coatings formulation, application (by key spray methodologies, hand spray, airless spray, HVLP spray), product testing, defining conclusions and next steps.
3-5 yrs direct experience in solvent based high performance Industrial Coatings (2K PU or 2K epoxy / amine) will include formulation, application and testing, drawing conclusions and defining next steps.
Preferred to also have experience in Industrial wood coatings and automotive coatings.
Must have an in-depth knowledge of formulations for Industrial Coatings with respect to relevant resin systems, pigments, additives and solvents
Must understand physical-chemical relationship of formulations and their performance capabilities
Must have in depth knowledge of industrial coating customer’s performance testing methods.
Must be self reliant in coatings application and testing to derive conclusions to the objectives set out in the project.
Must be able to set up project plans that meet customer objectives with expected outcomes in a timely and independent manner
