Sr. Business Analyst (2201848) – Houston, TX

Where the Chemistry Happens

The Basic Petrochemicals Business Development team (N-CPN/B) is seeking a professional like you who will evaluate a range of projects and alternatives for Cracker & Ethylene Oxide businesses. In addition to cost/benefit analysis the successful candidate will drive projects from the conceptual stage through implementation as a key member of the Basic Petrochemical team. Comfortable in chaos and ambiguity, the analyst can condense down the complexity and effectively communicate the recommended path forward.

Basic Petrochemicals in North America are broadly traded commodities with a high degree of price volatility. Triggered by currently very low feedstock costs as a result of shale oil and shale gas developments, the industry is going through an investment boom, which will have a tremendous impact on the petrochemical market, on prices for products and feedstocks and on the profitability of investment opportunities. Additionally, the focus on sustainability will further expand the various projects that will be evaluated.

You will also work with a broad spectrum of BASF Corporation and BASF SE teams; therefore, you will need to demonstrate organizational maturity, technical and business acumen to perform the job effectively.

Formula for Success

  • Leveraging your educational background in Engineering and professional experience in strategic business development, you will provide operational support to the business, comment on cost and margin trends, and compare actual results with budget and forecast for the North American Region. You will also have the opportunity to utilize your M&A experience.

  • Your strong proficiency in economic and business analysis will be a valued asset as you independently derive business cases and assumptions and also lead alignment with JV partners or other site/business functional groups (technology teams, project management, business management or controlling).

  • Driving strategic decisions for the business, you will support the creation and implementation of the operational plan, including frequent alignment with key business stakeholders, and support forecasting and budgeting process/operational planning for the Cracker Business.

  • Your high level of autonomy and decision-making ability will serve you well as you model and evaluate multiple options/opportunities and business cases and provide economic analysis for various projects. Due to size of the contemplated projects and investment opportunities, final decisions are being made at the BASF president or Board level.

  • Contributing any understanding you may have of the breadth of operations within the Basic Petrochemicals businesses including assets in Port Arthur, TX (BTP Cracker), Freeport operation, Geismar EO operation as well as all supply chain and logistics operations pertaining to these assets or other new investments will be a valued asset as you carry out the responsibilities of the position. The collective value of the assets is in the order of $6 Billion with EBIT in the range of $400 Million and annual investment budgets in the range of $350 Million.

  • Supporting the Basic Petrochemical Business Team, you will conduct various analyses of operations, cost, profitability market and feedstock for the cracker business. Additionally, you will identify and analyze potential opportunities for new projects and business optimization in close cooperation with BASF Total Petrochemicals (BTP) Joint Venture business management and BTP Optimization Operations. You will also conduct strategic and economic evaluations of Basic Petrochemical investment projects in North America, in close alignment with colleagues from Global Strategy Petrochemicals (CP/S), Global Technology Petrochemicals and Corporate Economic Evaluation (CDE).

  • Successfully engaging across the organization, you will aid in preparing market statements, analysis and presentations for the BTP Management Committee, BTP Board as well as BASF ComS, ComF or other central approval and also fulfill various request and initiatives pertaining to the businesses.
