Our Service Unit Global Intellectual Property is one of the biggest inhouse IP units in Germany. We are responsible for all services relating to patents, trademarks, trade secrets, plant variety protection, copyrights, designs and IP Intelligence, as well as all IP-contracts. We are a global team servicing the entire BASF group and work in close alliance with the operating business units as well as with the research and technology platforms. In this way we create a basis for future business success and actively influence BASF's competitive situation.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Be part of our team Global IP BASF Performance Materials which is responsible for IP counseling of the division Performance Materials (PM), one of BASF’s largest business divisions with a revenue > 8.5 billion EUR (2022)! Being central in BASF’s transformation process with a strong focus on sustainability, PM is also one of the most innovative divisions, operating in a highly competitive environment.
Your tasks include the close contact with inventors, IP management, marketing, and R&D of the business division to counsel on all IP-related questions.
Also, you draft patent applications and handle examination proceedings before the respective patent offices.
You defend our patent portfolio in legal proceedings before patent offices and courts as well as secure freedom-to-operate for the business vis-à-vis our competitors.
In addition, you support and coordinate patent litigation proceedings together with external law firms and support the build-up of a strategic patent portfolio.
You analyze the monitoring of 3rd parties’ patents together with colleagues from IP Intelligence.
Finally, you draft and negotiate IP-related contracts such as licenses, joint development agreements, or cooperation agreements in interdisciplinary teams and conduct IP trainings for the business.
QUALIFICATIONS
master’s degree in chemistry (preferably polymer chemistry), chemical engineering or related field (ideally incl. PhD)
(almost) completed training as European and/or German Patent Attorney
at least four years IP experience in an industry IP department and/or major law firm
preferably experience in drafting and negotiating IP related contracts such as licenses and cooperations
business fluency in German and English
a business-oriented mindset, enthusiasm for challenging IP questions and openness to work in interdisciplinary teams in a diverse and international environment
