Where the Chemistry Happens

You will be responsible for the management & further development of BASF’s Northeast Research Alliance (NORA) comprised of collaborative research and development projects, partnering with the faculty and staff at Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University of Massachusetts Amherst. You will accelerate the positive growth of BASF’s presence in the greater Boston area in research and development by leveraging BASF’s corporate membership in the Startup Incubator Greentown Labs in Sommerville, MA, and by serving as a key focal point for technology scouting in collaboration with top universities, Venture Capital Firms & technology startups for materials science and engineering.

As BASF continues to expand its businesses beyond traditional markets, our North America academic innovation environment evolves into a more valuable source of ideas & technologies for innovation and new product development. This position reports organizationally to the VP of Advanced Materials Research (RA/N) and functionally to the Senior Vice President of Research Advanced Materials and Systems Research-Scouting & Incubation (RA/I).

Formula for Success :

  • You will capitalize on your experience in industrial research, product development and innovation processes, your broad knowledge in materials science and understanding of BASF’s global business and its R&D landscape

  • Your proven track record of collaboration with academic partners will contribute to successfully coordinating & facilitating the activities of BASF’s global research platforms and business units engaged in joint research work at the above mentioned institutions in North America and support the early identification of technologies relevant to BASF

  • Being a respected scientist yourself, you will quickly maintain BASF’s existing network of relationships with scientists and staff at institutions as well as further develop connections and networks with technology leaders in one of North America’s premier locations for innovation

  • In partnership with the SVP of RA/I, you will define the broad general objectives of technology scouting and establish and implement impactful long term and short-term action plans which achieve research objectives

  • Your R&D project management experience and leadership skills will aid you in actively soliciting project technology themes from the business units and research platforms which are associated with materials technologies

  • In union with the sponsoring unit, you will assist in the formulation of research projects to be pursued at the universities and facilitate the establishment of necessary legal agreements, leveraging your experience with intellectual property rights including licensing and legal contracts with public and private partners, and align with the established global processes for collaborations and consulting on intellectual property options in the NORA framework

  • You will exercise your development of high performing teams, strong relationship management skills, organizational agility, impactful strategic development of technologies, effective resource management and event execution

  • Leveraging your strong global technical network and ability to successfully lead global strategic research topics, you will be recognized for your inherent passion for science and continuous contributions to scientific literature
