Operations Technician I (2002270) – Memphis, TN

Where the Chemistry Happens…

This job functions to support all Global Cotton Breeding Operations at the greenhouse facility in Memphis, TN. Projects conducted within this facility are conducted to ensure a continuous flow of breeding materials that are generated annually, in appropriate quantities, with genetic integrity, quality, and fit for purpose, as these materials are produced in support of commercial breeding objectives of the Global CB Team. These activities also involve understanding how to use these facilities to effectively manage the crop to maximize productivity with the greatest efficiency of resources and time. Furthermore, critical to the success of this program will be the candidate’s ability to communicate and coordinate labor to complete objectives, while operating in compliance with Stewardship, Regulatory, Legal, HSE and other BASF Policy standards and practices.

Formula for Success: You Will…

  • Conduct breeding research projects as guided or instructed by supervisors to effective conclusions, following established work instructions and safety protocols: planting, plant protein testing, crop care, pollinating, emasculations, crossing, harvesting, seed processing and inventory.

  • Supervise contract labor to efficiently achieve success in a wide variety of greenhouse projects and activities while minimizing the use of time and resources.

  • Aid in the labor selection, orienting and training contract labor, and may also support site tours of local guests or customers.

  • Aid others in all aspects of greenhouse operations to achieve successful conclusions and outcomes, which may include non-familiar tasks: plant sampling and freeze-drying of plant tissues involved with regulated technologies, seed inventory management, ginning and delinting, pest management.

  • Participate and collaborate with global cotton breeding projects as needed to further research regarding breeding innovations or discovery efforts: being responsible for taking repeated plant measurements over time, or other forms of data collection, tabulating results.

  • Support weekend and holiday rotations regarding plant care and other needed operations without supervision.

  • Account for or forecast resources involved with their activities and reports same to management, ensure worker safety, conduct your actions within all BASF Policy guidelines, and perform actions with integrity towards PGI, Stewardship, Regulatory, BioSafety and all Quality Management policies and trainings.

  • Complete all requirements in a timely manner.

  • Carry out activities with constant effort to aid the team in innovative ways to conduct efforts, that speed breeding processes, make more efficient use of people, money and time, create a better work environment for themselves and those they work with, and to generate reductions in earth resources: electricity, water, consumables, pesticides, while continuing to deliver projects to our customer/breeding programs in a timely manner.



· Associates degree, or equivalent or higher, in scientific or related fields.

· Minimum of 3 years of experience preferably in greenhouse work, or related fields.

· Knowledge of basic computer skills


· Greenhouse experience preferred: caring for plants growing in contained environments.

· Ability to effectively communicate, train and lead small groups of contract laborers.

· Ability to operate computers and/or greenhouse equipment, or ability to learn same.

· Demonstrated flexibility in supporting team objectives, and working with others.

· Ability to work alone to complete tasks, especially on weekends and holidays.


· General understanding of botany, horticulture and agronomic sciences.

· An ability to work under very warm, humid conditions in close contact with plants and cotton pollen.

· Good communication skills, and an ability to work in a challenging work environment with a diverse team of people with various skill levels.

· An ability to learn new automation systems involved with greenhouse operations and databases.
