Where the Chemistry Happens
We are seeking a professional like you to provide legal advice, support and services to BASF Canada’s Business and Functional Units, on compliance and labour/employment topics.
Provide legal advice on employment, compliance and labour law matters.
Formulate, draft and implement labour & employment and compliance related company strategies, policies, procedures (as required) to mitigate risk for the Company.
Develop strategy regarding various legal hearings.
Advise and assist in the resolution of matters relating to discipline and termination of employment, including constructive and wrongful dismissal.
Provide guidance on matters related to workplace investigations.
Draft severance documentation, provide advice on severance matters.
Interpret, advise and proactively communicate/ update the Company on employment and labour related laws, rulings, regulations & general compliance, outlining the implications to the Company, as well as create and execute action plans to manage the impact of such implications.
Ensure employment contracts are designed to align with business requirements while protecting the interests of the Company.
Engage in risk management analyses in the areas of employment, labour, compliance and occupational health and safety.
Proactively brainstorm and partner with employees in respect of possible future initiatives and business directions.
Promote company learning through the preparation and presentation of seminars pertaining to topics of employment, labour and compliance.
Assist in developing internal compliance and risk management programs.
Retain and manage external legal counsel, negotiate alternative fee arrangements, review invoices.
Law degree from an accredited institution.
Member of Law Society of Upper Canada.
In addition to being licensed to practice law in Ontario, being licensed to also practice law in Manitoba, Saskatchewan or Alberta is a strong asset.
8-10 years of post-call experience in employment/compliance law at a law firm or corporate legal department. Some in-house experience preferred.
Labour law experience is an asset.
Experience in occupational health and safety law is an asset.
Experience in a regulatory, risk or control related environment.
Experience in testing controls and workplace investigations.
Experience in dealing with senior management in a matrixed, global environment.
Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
Strong analytical and negotiations skills.
Practical and shows good judgment and common sense.
Ability to handle many matters simultaneously, to manage multiple tight deadlines, and to prioritize effectively.
