What You'll Be Doing - The Material Handling Working Crew Leader role is an important leadership position working in the Service group at the Newport site. This position is responsible for coordinating the daily activities of the service group in a safe and productive manner. The Working Crew Leader is accountable for the Material Handling related activity supporting the site goals with a focus on achieving the highest standard with regards to Safety, Quality, Productivity, and Housekeeping.

  • Support and adhere to the principles of the American Chemistry Council's Responsible Care® by protecting the environment, health, safety and security of our employees, contractors, carriers, distributors, visitors, customers and neighbors. Be knowledgeable of and follow all Environmental, Health and Safety practices including but not limited to: manage waste movements according to satellite and/or 90-day accumulation requirements, inspect air contaminant sources and institute corrective action for out-of-spec conditions, prevent releases into the sewer and/or stormwater systems by following BMPs (best management practices), activate BASF emergency response procedures in case of spills or other emergencies. Comply with the requirements of the ISO9001:2015 Quality Management System.

  • Accountable for ensuring the service group maintains the ability to flow to the work as efficiently as possible. Review and/or create SOP’s and work instructions to further clarify job tasks for the Material Handling group. Lead the effort to manage the proper put away/staging/storage of materials in support of the site activities.

  • Accountable that the Material handling group comply with site EHS guidelines, department EHS guidelines and embrace behavior based safety (ERP) by supporting SIREN observers on your team to complete behavior based observations in support of an improved safety culture.

  • Maintain a process of daily adherence to all Standard operating procedures and work instructions that ensure each task is performed properly the first time and every time.This includes all documentation related to environmental and safety compliance,6S of Material Handling facilities, and visual boards for efficient communication of priorities.

  • Develop trouble shooting capabilities of the service group through training and on the job problem solving opportunities.Support the training plans of service members and support Logistics leader in assessing employee competency during new employee and annual reviews.

  • Provide daily support for the following: Communication to the plant regarding inbound/outbound materials, enter work notifications as necessary to repair or upgrade service related equipment, enter AIMS reports and implements/confirms corrective actions.

Shine With Colors & Effects! Do You Have What It Takes?


  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Minimum 2 years of experience of Material Handling activity in an ISO certified chemical manufacturing plant.

  • Working knowledge of Material handling and bulk chemical loading and unloadingoperations.

  • Strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills are required.

  • Capabilities to successfully train others on Material Handling processes.

  • Computer skills – Ability to learn/work with MS Office, PI data, SAP, and Documentum.

  • Ability to learn/apply trouble shooting skills in a complex manufacturing environment.

  • Well-developed and practical knowledge of occupational and process safety requirements (LOTO, Confined Space, Hot Work, PPE, etc.).

  • Understanding of Hazardous and Non-hazardous waste handling, DOT requirements, and Waste accumulation area requirements.

  • Passion for quality, continuous improvement mindset, and meeting customer needs.

  • Willingness/Ability to be a member of the site’s emergency response team.

  • Willingness/Ability to work overtime beyond the standard schedule/Holidays to ensure the plant is protected at all times.

  • Do you have a Six Sigma/Lean training certification? Great!

  • Emergency Response Team participation is a plus.

  • Personnel leadership/management experience preferred.
