Project Engineer and Specialist Support (ID: 2100819)

Where the Chemistry Happens…

This primary function of this position is for planning, managing, executing and supporting Engineering Services activities across BASF Canada sites. This includes providing project and technical support to 7 sites belonging to different Operating Divisions (OD) and various Agricultural OD farms & labs. In the Canadian region. In this role, the Project Engineer is expected to provide Engineering solutions, in conjunction with both internal and external expertise, to ensure delivery of engineering support services and project execution.

Additionally, support in knowledge sharing and development of a strong and effective Engineering Services team in BASF Canada

Formula for Success: You Will…

  • Develop project scopes, generate and/or obtains cost estimates, and prepare appropriation funding requests. Ensure that appropriate project safety reviews are completed as required both before and after approval. Utilize applicable value-based Engineering practices (VBE) to optimize project scope and cost

  • Ensure compliance with all environmental, safety, and health requirements, and promote a safe working environment for project execution. This includes supervising and supporting employees and contractors on site

  • Develop and maintain partnerships with assigned project manufacturing representatives and project managers for Capital Projects from initial scoping and funding, through detailed engineering, procurement and execution, startup and commissioning with finally documentation and closure.

  • Request and coordinate required process and discipline engineering and design resources, whether from the site or corporate groups or outside engineering vendors, to prepare engineering design deliverables and to procure equipment, fabricated materials, and services.

  • Adhere to current corporate and plant requirements for equipment/materials specifications and vendor preferences.

  • Maintain SAP project data entries, monitor project progress through scheduling and other tools, perform project status reporting, and control spending through appropriate tracking, forecasting, and adjustments.

  • Perform procurement support activities as required, including preparing specifications, issuing requisitions, evaluating bids, and dealing with vendors. Collaboration with Procurement to ensure compliance with applicable guidelines.

  • Request necessary construction and commissioning resources from Construction Discipline and others as required for installation of the scope of work.

  • Monitor and support construction activities to ensure that projects are completed according to the design deliverables, quality standards, and plant requirements, and that pre-startup safety reviews are conducted.

Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…

  • Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering field, preferably Mechanical, Industrial Systems or Chemical Engineering

  • Prefer a registered Engineer in Training (E.I.T.), preferable with APEGS ( Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan)

  • 2 - 3 years working within Engineering, Construction, Maintenance and Process Improvement environment within a chemical or process plant or similar environment.

  • Experience as a project engineer.

  • Project management tools ie. SAP, MS Projects, Autocad etc.

  • Interaction and communication at a high competency level in manufacturing technical discussions.

  • Familiarity of Health and Safety systems, including hierarchy of control, risk assessments, and work authorization

  • Knowledge of chemical process equipment including but not limited to rotating equipment, heat transfer, solids handling, storage tanks and vessels.

  • Strong scheduling skills to support engineering and construction activities, including familiarity with MS-Projects.

  • Working knowledge of process measurement and control instruments

  • Basic understanding of Distributed Control Systems (DCS or PLC) and Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS)

  • Knowledge of applicable codes and regulations e.g. CSA, API, ASME

  • Organization skills in resource planning and task management

  • Embrace diversity and inclusion way of work management and team building

  • Very strong customer focus capabilities to closely interact with multiple organizational levels at supported sites

  • Ability to support an organization of highly skilled project management and discipline engineering resources

  • Demonstrated work experience in capital project execution

  • A strong technical background in Mechanical, Industrial, Civil or Chemical Engineering to provide focused support in the area of expertise.

  • Ability to challenge status quo, identify innovative solutions and drive & support change throughout the organization, especially Engg. Svcs.

  • The ability to work autonomously within a virtual environment with minimal direct managerial oversight

  • Effective team player

  • Up to 40 - 50% travel is expected, subject to business needs and changing environment
