Where the Chemistry Happens…

The Technical Service Specialist is responsible for ensuring that Marketing, Sales and Technical product positioning is in alignment for the Region they support. The Technical Service Specialist supports sales objectives through direct interaction with the sales team and indirectly by influencing key external customers in the Region.

The Technical Service Specialist is responsible for providing technical training to the sales force and key influencers within the Region. This includes training the sales Specialists on investigative field techniques and technical support with product investigation where necessary. Technical Service Specialists look to Senior Technical Service Specialists for input on course design and training techniques suitable for adult education.

The Technical Service Specialist is responsible for the execution of summer demand creation activities including large scale grower trials and demonstration sites within the Region. They execute the Demonstration Strip Trial program to support the sale of InVigor canola which includes managing and maintaining site from seeding to harvest. They are responsible for providing supportive data to meet sales objectives and address product usage questions. This includes coordinating third party testing to support label expansion.

The Technical Service Specialist is responsible for monitoring and positively influencing key centers of influence (COI) in the region through relationship building and regular contact. These include universities, consultants, provincial extension staff and retail agronomists. They provide product information, label updates, and technical results to these COI's. The Technical Service Specialist also administers local demonstration and grant programs.

The Technical Service Specialist provides the technical link to the market place. Regular interaction with Brand Managers, Retail and Grower Reps, Innovation Specialists, Technical Marketing Managers, and Biology is imperative. The Technical Service Specialists must become familiar with new BASF products 1 year prior to market.

Formula for Success: You Will…

  • Monitor and positively influencing key centers of influence (COI) such as universities, consultants, provincial extension staff and retail agronomists through relationship building and regular contact.

  • Provide product information, label updates, and technical results to COI's.

  • Administers local demonstration and grant in aid programs to support business goals in the Region.

  • Manage the execution of summer demand creation activities including large scale grower trials and demonstration sites within the Region.

  • Execute and managed Demonstration strip trials associated with canola demand creation for InVigor.

  • Supervise Technical Service Summer Associates who support summer demand creation activities and data collection on key projects.

  • Coordinate third party research associated with third party demo sites.

  • Provide supportive data to meet sales objectives and address product usage questions.

  • Deliver training through a variety of presentation tools

  • Technical training and reinforcement of product positioning with sales force.

  • Technical support for product inquiries

  • One on one technical sales calls with key influencers

  • Use generated field and university research data to develop tools that support marketing and sales tactics and facilitate the technical transfer of information

  • Develop and implement strategic plans for each KIP. These plans often relate to joint research projects, graduate student projects etc.

  • Make GIA recommendations for research projects in western Canada.

  • Partner with key influencers and institutions on specific research projects.

  • Serve on academic or trade/grower association boards or committees.

  • Acquire external data which supports brand positioning.

  • Provide technical input and market insight to our long range planning process, particularly as it relates to proprietary technology verses competitor technology.

  • Expert role in terms of technical gaps and market trends to facilitate long term planning. Ensure local trends are communicated to the Marketing team

Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…

  • B.Sc or M.Sc in Agriculture/Biology with emphasis on crop science, weed science, agronomy, entomology, plant pathology or related discipline.

  • Minimum 2-4 years’ relative field experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to recommend product positioning based on evaluating data and customer needs. Experience in working with growers, distribution/retail, universities, or consultants would be beneficial.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential. Must be effective when communicating with a wide variety of audiences. Must be able to relate with key influencer contacts on product technical attributes and agronomic issues associated with major crops in the Region.

  • Actively participate on teams to achieve business goals. Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership to the sales team is beneficial. Strong organizational and time management skills are essential.

  • Ability to share knowledge and expertise with others as it relates to product positioning. Must be skilled at development and delivery of presentations to both external and internal customers. Must have excellent computer skills and be proficient in various software programs, including PowerPoint, Excel and Word.

  • Must be able to operate and transport plot equipment for spraying, maintenance and management of the Demonstration strip trial program. Must be eligible and willing to obtain the correct license in the province of employment to perform these tasks.
