R&D Head, Digital & Cropping Systems Field Biology (2101591) – Research Triangle Park, NC
Where the Chemistry Happens
In this R&D Leadership role you will contribute toward BASF-AP (Agricultural Products) vision for digital transformation of cropping systems agriculture to realize new levels of efficiency, effectiveness, sustainability, and carbon neutral farming. Evaluate and deliver prototypes for digital agriculture projects with business value and sustainability footprint via fast and effective experimentation.
Work collaboratively with Biology, Marketing and Technical Services teams for developing novel concepts and delivering R&D technical Biology support for current and future customer centric digital cropping system solutions.
Develop good agricultural practices for BASF liquid and solid chemicals using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) applications and see and spray technologies in collaboration with Xarvio/Bosch, global digital technology, precision application and agronomy functions.
Collaborate with Global functions in enabling precision application research in US and Canada. Ensure all digital R&D experimental/evaluation data is properly captured, analyzed, interpreted, and shared with global and regional stakeholders in a timely manner.
Be responsible for leading and overseeing day to day operations of AP crop digital R&D center and develop datasets from a controlled environment which in turn will lead to optimized field testing and or piloting early stage digital tools and cropping system concepts.
Explore novel opportunities with scouting and other emerging agronomic artificial intelligence, data science, biologicals, and advanced analytics in cropping systems.
Lead strategic planning, administrative and operations management of US field research personnel and build a diverse, inclusive, and empowered team.
Build infrastructure for deployment of digital R&D agricultural cropping systems field trialing at NA AP research farm sites. Be an expert and provide leadership to build digital Agriculture tools and technology competencies across NA R&D.
Ph.D. or M.S. with 5 years of relevant work experience or B.S. degree with 10 years of relevant work experience in agriculture sciences or applied data science or digital agronomy.
Preferred field of study in Biological Sciences, Crop Science, Agronomy, Agriculture Business, or related fields
Knowledge of best management practices for crop, soil, and pest management and other sustainable agricultural practices.
Knowledge of crop protection research processes/techniques, agronomic and plant protection practices.
Strong analytical, written, and verbal communication skills with an ability to take complex scientific concepts and translate them into simple messages
Working knowledge of computers and software, specifically MS Office, necessary for communication, data collection / analysis, and knowledge sharing.
Domestic and international travel for this role is expected to be at least 10-15% of the time.
Prior experience in precision agriculture, data analytics.
Strong knowledge of agriculture equipment, farming operations and agricultural challenges.
Ability to acquire a UAV license for operating drones.
Ability to translate business needs and priorities into R&D initiatives with specific and sustainable outcomes.
Demonstrated ability to be a strategic and forward thinker.
Strong listening skills
Experience working in cross functional regional and global teams to move crop protection products and or digital Agronomy services into the market.
Management experience, e.g. demonstrated working within assigned budget, managing workload distribution, personnel management, including performance mgt, compensation planning, hiring, etc.
