Trait Development Agronomist (2301369) - Saskatoon, SK

Where the Chemistry Happens…

Located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and reporting to the Oilseeds Trait Development Manager, this role closely interacts with the Trait Development Team to select novel traits in the Research phase and support their move through the Development phase by the selection of elite events or elite allele combinations for local and global Trait Development programs. This is accomplished through location planning, creating field trial protocols, field plans, management and agronomy of in season seed to harvest activities, establishing and maintaining strong grower relations, data collection and recording, and analysis (including statistical analysis) of agronomic and quality data.

Formula for Success: You Will…

  • Conduct and manage Trait Development field trials in Canada, ensuring high quality standards under regulated and/or stewarded requirements.

  • Assist in the development of new methods and protocols for testing new traits and selecting events and allele combinations as well as provide feedback and suggestions to established methods and protocols to improve the efficiency and quality of the program.

  • Conduct and manage seed production, ensuring quality and quantity of seed is produced meeting the requirements of the Trait Development selection program.

  • Manage seed logistics within the program to ensure accurate tracking and record keeping as well as movement of seed within the program by maintaining seed stock, conducting seed set up activities, maintaining seed inventory records and archives, and ensuring traceability of seed throughout the program.

  • Implement SOPs & WIs for Trait Development field trials and seed production to ensure the following criteria: event purity, QC/QA and regulatory compliance (within the framework of Product Stewardship).

  • Implement the principles of Trait Development selection.

  • Establish and maintain industry relations to ensure a presence that BASF is up to date on current industry activities by participating in meetings and establishing contacts with external parties.

Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…

  • Degree in Agriculture preferably in Crop Science or related field.

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in plant breeding, genetics, canola agronomy, canola botany, pollen flow and genetic purity.

  • Experience conducting research trials using statistical design and analysis.

  • Ability to work with machinery required to conduct trials.

  • Demonstrate problem solving skills and ability to be flexible and modify plans as required in order to minimize impact on data and production as situations arise.

  • Proven ability to work independently as well as in a team, either as a member or supervising contract employees.

  • Track record of partnering with 3rd parties and industry partners.

  • Proven ability to work and communicate with growers.
