What you can expect

The maintenance breeder manages and coordinates the maintenance and production of the parental components for the key regions Germany as well as Poland and ensures the varietal purity for official trials and downstream supply chain processes. In addition, the maintenance breeder supports the parental breeder in elite line development focussing on production traits and in testing these within the BASF wheat breeding network.

  • You will be responsible for the maintenance breeding and production of experimental seeds for hybrid wheat. This includes the production of breeder seeds as well as the application of modern data base programs for planning the maintenance trials.

  • Furthermore, you will collaborate in the development of native trait strategies and seed production traits jointly with parental as well as discovery breeders.

  • You will represent BASF wheat breeding in countries collaborative projects for maintenance breeding, production systems and native trait discovery.

  • In addition, you will manage the maintenance breeding team in Gatersleben, which also includes the supervision of seasonal workers.

  • Last but not least, you will ensure compliance with safety and stewardship directives as well as quality standards.

What we expect

  • master's degree or PhD in agriculture, plant breeding, plant genetics or a related scientific field

  • at least 2 years of professional experience in cereal breeding research and/or field-based phenotyping

  • experience in molecular marker technology and statistical analysis of field trial data

  • willingness to improve leadership skills by participating in relevant training programs

  • fluent in German and English language skills
