Where the chemistry happens…

Under the supervision of and in cooperation with the Breeder, this position gives direction to the breeding program to guide the development of new varieties in alignment with the company’s strategy, and with short time-to-market introduction for successful varieties.

The Specialist, Breeding provides guidance and support for operational breeding practice implementation for the specified crop(s) in their assigned program. This position is responsible for planning, implementing and monitoring organizational practices in order to ensure consistent delivery of customer-preferred varieties. This includes managing the Elite Stock Seed Program to provide the Operations department with the required quantities of high-quality seed.

As a Breeding Specialist - Onion, You Create Chemistry By...

  • Optimizing the efficiency and output of the breeding program by collaborating with the Breeder to design and implement new technologies and breeding methods in order to ensure a constant flow of commercially successful varieties.

  • Managing and executing the increase and maintenance of excellent Foundation seed, Stock Seed and/or Production departments in order to ensure the availability of the quantity and quality of Basic stock seeds.

  • Overseeing crop monitoring, modification of growing environments, and compliance testing, including pest and disease scouting, seed sampling, exportation of onion seed/tissue samples, and ensuring data is collected, formatted, entered, and shared within the company’s breeding database and related software per established procedures.

  • Designing, evaluating and formulating the short-term breeding plan, the work process and performance by means of drawing up trial data in filing system. Preparing summary reports, giving feedback, making proposals and drawing conclusions about the breeding program

  • Establishing the budget/detail plans for the respective breeding segments. Organizing and hiring interns or seasonal contract workers for screening and complete screening contracts with growers to be in compliance with company regulations.

  • Using general understanding of germplasm to suggest hybrid selection for various and/or specific segments and regions as well as providing feedback to the breeder about potential new source of traits. Using general knowledge of hybrid profiles in the evaluation of the hybrids in various regions. Supporting the breeder during the Elevation Meetings of varieties.

  • Maintaining permanent communication with the Breeder. Coordinating and communicating the breeding program activities to the technicians and specialists in breeding, farms, labs and research and provide them with technical advice to meet agreed-upon standards. Maintaining close intensive communication with PD team. Cooperating with growers to ensure an optimal performance of our screenings/experiments conducted on their fields and greenhouses.

  • Developing and maintaining updated and broad vision on the market demands and translate market demands into breeding goals in order to be able to act for the breeder as an equal discussion partner on all breeding issues and to replace the breeder for short to medium term periods (max. 1 year).

If you...

  • Possess minimum B.Sc. with 3-5 years of applicable experience, or M.Sc with 0-2 years of applicable experience. Additional plant breeding courses preferred.

  • Have 1 or more years of experience in carrying out trials in plant breeding or related discipline. Experience in plant breeding or scientific setting is preferred.

  • Are fluent in verbal and written English, with preferred additional skills in Spanish.

  • Posses excellent communication skills in written and verbal form. Strong team work with the ability to organize and plan. Ability to build relationships to work closely with customers.

  • Have working knowledge of Microsoft Office, with basic knowledge of databases and statistics.

  • Have general understanding of crossing programs, applied phytopathology, data management, market needs, digital data collection, plant breeding and genetics related to phenotyping and selection and germplasm management

  • Have applicable knowledge of horticultural practices and procedures, including basic understanding of statistics, molecular breeding.

  • Ability to learn and operate specialized breeding equipment, knowledgeable about agricultural and market practices in the onion industry, effective communication and coaching skills, and preferably experienced with pollinators such as bees and flies.

  • Ability to work in varied working environments including outdoor field conditions

  • Ability to travel up to 15%

Pay Transparency

BASF is committed to pay transparency practices. The competitive Pay Range for this role is $62,400 - $85,800. Actual pay will be determined based on education, certifications, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
