Technology Manager –Construction Systems (1901424) – Shakopee, MN

Where the ChemistryHappens

This position will requires strong technical and management background with extensive Product Development, Technical Service, Product Line Management, and/or Marketing Management experience with substantial industry involvement. You will direct the activities of a research and development group and those responsibilities will include:

  • planning, organizing, and ensuring success ofprograms to support strategic market development and corporate technologyleadership

  • establishing and coordinating priorities withmarketing, sales, operations and other departments

  • communicating results and status of activities

  • providing expertise in support of technical,sales, operations, and marketing initiatives

  • serving as member of the Construction SystemsLeadership Team, the global R&D Management Committee (RDMC), and the globalSegment Portfolio Team (SPT).

  • Able to synthesize complex subjects,make decisions, and set strategic direction.

  • Able to understand multitude ofdifferent product technologies and applications in context of serving customerneeds, developing/optimizing markets, and developing/optimizing a productportfolio.

  • Demonstrates excellent projectmanagement and resource management skills. Is able to teach/coach projectmanagement, product line management, and product development processes andskills. Able to anticipate, detect, andprevent unproductive use of R&D resources.

  • Experienced in key aspects of productstrategy: product positioning, product and technology road-mapping,intellectual property, competitive use of standards and certifications, productand technology platforms, quality and value, and product management.

  • Strong leadership skills includingdemonstrated experience with personnel issues as well as developing, coachingand leading employees to success.

  • Ability to lead teams, to buildteams, to serve as a team member, and to infuse teams with functional productdevelopment, product management, and R&D expertise.

  • Highly developed business acumen.Understands business strategy and processes and is able to make businessdecisions as member of the leadership team.

  • Deep knowledge of the constructionindustry is preferred.

  • Able to influence individuals acrossall functional organizations and at all levels and further collaboration acrossdepartment boundaries.

  • Excellent presentation, communicationand computer skills.


New Product Development

  1. Work with business partners onprioritizing and resolving new product development ideas to establish apowerful R&D project portfolio.

  2. Establish product development programsand work with teams to ensure that projects are completed on schedule andmeet documented goals.

  3. Ensure adoption and use of the NPPprocess and appropriate tools by BL’s.

Strategy and Management

  1. Ensure that BL strategies are adoptedby R&D and that resources are deployed to match these strategies.

  2. Incorporate leading edge tools andmanagement techniques that can improve process performance, efficiency, orspeed.

  3. Optimize BASF Construction ChemicalsIntellectual Property & Patent portfolio.

  4. Work with business partner to analyzenew product opportunities and marketing portfolio to prioritize projectselection decisions.

Technology and Capability Development

  1. As member of the R&D/TechnologyManagement Team, implement programs for organizational development, includingstaffing decisions, employee development programs and R&D processimprovements.

  2. Identify new technology platforms todevelop leading edge products.

  3. Direct long-term research efforts,including partnerships with universities, industry consortiums, andgovernment agencies.

  4. Represent BASF Construction Chemicalsinterests in external bodies (e.g. DRTT, professional organizations,suppliers) to ensure optimal extraction of value from these relationships.

Member of Construction Systems Leadership Team, RDMC, and SPT

  1. Develop and implement business andR&D/ technology strategies.

  2. Determine innovation portfolios at aregional and global level.

  3. Prepare yearly budgets. Manage expensesto meet budget.

  4. Implement chemical hygiene plan, asrequired per applicable regulations and BASF policies.

  5. Other duties as assigned.

• Ensure that his/her area/function is clearly and verifiably organized, and that it performs in accordance with specifications outlined by Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Policy Requirements and applicable laws and regulations. Must determine and evaluate the risks to humans and the environment and take the necessary actions to eliminate identified non-conformance or deviations.

Must keep his/her EHS knowledge updated.

• Continue professional development, including Company EHS training programs and outside seminars.

• Must understand and follow all quality initiatives and processes for ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001:2004 and other ISO regulations, procedures and processes as they pertain to job responsibilities.

• Process safety roles and responsibilities across the organization are clearly defined and include an expectation to raise, and authority to respond to process safety concerns. Senior leaders are held accountable for process safety performance. Employees understand the importance of process safety as it applies to their jobs and are responsible for following and contributing to the work processes to achieve improvement in company process safety performance.
