In this role, you will develop new coatings formulas in multiple technologies that meet customer requirements for appearance, workability, and film performance. In addition, you will support daily operation on BASF products in Customer Automotive Assembly plant by providing technical and application knowledge. The role responds to customer requirements, enforce product quality/performance specification, and support new product/application development. You will provide expertise of product performance including color management, defect identification. and corrective action if necessary. You will support the efforts of the BASF team to assure value to the customer for product technical support and problem investigation, analysis, and resolution. Must be willing to work flexible hours.

Develop new coatings formulas in multiple technologies that meet customer requirements for appearance, workability, and film performance. Support daily operation on BASF products in Customer Automotive Assembly plant by providing technical and application knowledge. The role responds to customer requirements, enforces product quality/performance specification, and supports new product/application development. S/He will provide expertise of product performance including color management, defect identification and corrective action if necessary. Role supports the efforts of BASF team to assure value to the customer for product technical support and problem investigation, analysis and resolution.

Resolve customer problems in the areas of color, application, workability and film performance by developing methods to reproduce customer problems, design experiments to correct the problem, work with manufacturing to implement changes, report to customer root cause and corrective actions.

Evaluate formulas for workability and film performance to ensure they meet customer requirements

Work in a lab to make and test paint samples to internal and customer specifications.

Assist internal manufacturing and customer facilities with batch evaluation and provide technical direction when needed.

Travel to multiple sites to review batch concerns and decide on adjustments when introducing new technologies to the manufacturing plants.

Develop and adapt technologies to meet customer criteria.

Formulate paint based off existing formula guidelines and best practices, and develop new formulations and guidelines if the current ones do not pass customer criteria. This will involve developing DOEs and making and testing paint samples.

The person doing this job will be in a high-pressure environment trying to meet demanding customer expectations and timing for successfully introducing new primers and basecoats to the market. The person will be working in and around a wet laboratory environment as well as in a customer’s production facility. The person will regularly interact with the account team, and occasionally directly with the customer in developing formulas and resolving problems to meets the customer’s needs/expectations.

The person will have a significant, but not final, say in what the formulas will be that are manufactured and provided to the customer. The person will have a significant, but not final, say in solving customer problems.

The job interacts with manufacturing to transfer formulas to production.

The job interacts with internal customer account representatives to demonstrate that the products developed meet internal and customer requirements, and to review solutions to problems.

The job interacts with other technical groups to help develop their formulas and help solve their problems.

This position is responsible for trouble-shooting primer & basecoat formulas in a customer plant. S/He will be part of the launching team for technology introduction, and it will be very high pace and short timelines.

Formula for Success

  • Your ability to thrive within a high-pressure, demanding environment will be a valued asset as you will develop methods to reproduce customer problems, design experiments to correct them, work with manufacturing to implement changes, and report to customer the root cause and corrective actions.

  • Leveraging your educational background in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline, combined with your laboratory experience, as well as your ability to pass the Munsell Hue color test, you will make and test paint samples to internal and customer satisfaction.

  • Utilizing your automotive paint and color experience, you will Formulate paint based off existing formula guidelines and best practices, and develop new formulations and guidelines if the current ones do not pass customer criteria, which will involve developing DOEs, and making and testing paint samples.

  • Your strong ability to design laboratory experiments will be essential as you evaluate formulas for workability and film performance to ensure they meet customer requirements.

  • Your strong commitment to customer service will be critical as you will assist internal manufacturing and customer facilities with batch evaluation and provide technical direction when needed.

Education / Experience

· Bachelor’s Degree in a science or mathematics major, chemistry preferred.

Experience

· Automotive Paint & Color preferred.

· Design of laboratory experiments preferred.
