Color Scientist (1902161) – Southfield, MI
Where the Chemistry Happens
We are seeking a professional like you to work within the color and pigment group and be accountable for the coordination of all color instrumentation processes for both Refinish and OEM coatings at BASF in North America. In this role, you will evaluate and select color measuring equipment and develop and test software to measure, display, and record color data. Since these instruments and software are necessary for the customer approval of color positions, you will have a link to both customers and suppliers to ensure all quality aspects are fulfilled for both customer and BASF Coatings interests. Internally, you will work closely with product management, technical design - development and service, operations, quality control, and account support functions to develop and execute short-and-long term color strategies. In addition, you will interact frequently with the Color Science Department in Münster, Germany to achieve targets established by the management teams. Additionally, you will help train and resource our organization in the area of color science.
You will lead and supervise 2-4 associates in color science-related functions at both the Southfield, MI and Whitehouse, OH locations.
Formula for Success
Leveraging your education and work experience in a scientific discipline, you will understand customer decision-making processes for color tolerances and approvals and disseminate the key elements of these processes to the appropriate BASF functions and positions.
Your solid communication and interpersonal skills will serve you well as you develop and maintain relationships with key instrument manufacturers.These skills will also aid you in the delivery and presentation of written business proposals in pursuit of new technology opportunities and/or to maintain or improve existing color science programs.
Your ability to manage and maintain color science programs and databases will be a great benefit to BASF products for Refinish and OEM.
Successfully engaging across the organization, you will support internal teams (Account, Technical, Quality, Operations) in the development of strategies, programs and tactics for color science and aid account management personnel in securing customer product and technology approvals, meeting product program timing and performance targets.
Demonstrating your intense customer focus, you will facilitate customer approvals of BASF products, technologies and change management initiatives for color instrumentation and control.You will also ensure compliance to customer product programs (e.g. ACP) and change management procedures.
Your strong business acumen and deep technical understanding will be necessary to develop and execute technical strategies that are consistent with agreed upon BASF Coatings strategies and financial targets.Additionally, you will work with the greater Color Excellence OEM team and Refinish to develop long-term strategies and policies.
Your extensive knowledge of instrumentation such as color spectrophotometers and how they may be applied to measure products will be essential as you decide on new instrument approval and acquisition and help set product and service prices and support.
Your strong organizational skills will aid you in managing and coordinating the flow of all color science communication between BASF Coatings, customers, and suppliers.You will also use these skills to manage and coordinate the fulfillment of customer bidding and request for quotation processes.
Relying on your proven leadership capabilities, you will lead and ensure the appropriate deployment of resources within the color science group to meet customer and BASF internal commitments.
