Research Specialist III (2000862) – West Sacramento, CA

Where the Chemistry Happens

We are seeking a professional like you to provide support to the Sr. Scientist, Crop Genetics in shaping molecular breeding strategy toward accelerated development of Tomato varieties. You will be responsible for the execution of research project activities in close collaboration with counterparts in breeding, pre-breeding, phytopathology, genomics, statistics, food biochemistry, cell biology, and bioinformatics teams. Development and implementation of genetic tools (primarily molecular markers) for global Tomato breeding programs will be your primary objective.

Formula for Success: You will...

  • PhD in Genetics, Plant Breeding or related fields and 2 years relevant experience or MS in Genetics, Plant Breeding or related fields with minimum of 8 years relevant experience or BS in Genetics, Plant Breeding or related fields with minimum of 10 years relevant experience

  • Initiate, plan, design, and execute marker development and marker application projects

  • Perform plant tissue sample collection and interact with Molecular Services for nucleic acid isolation and genotyping

  • Oversee and coordinate the execution of experiments across different departments (phytopathology, breeding, pre-breeding, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics)

  • Data analysis and interpretation of quantitative data

  • Data analysis and interpretation for the development of new molecular markers and genetic linkage maps.

  • Perform quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping and Genome wide association analyses (GWAs)

  • Facilitate marker-assisted selection (Breeding support)

  • Supervision of temporary staff (student interns and Lab Technicians)

  • Oversee shipping and/or transfer of information and sample material between domestic and international collaborators


  • Experience with molecular laboratory methods, techniques and marker platforms (Nucleic acid isolation, PCR setup, SSRs, SNPs, etc.)

  • Experience in a laboratory setting and ability to perform routine laboratory tasks required (Liquid handling with single and multichannel pipettes, scales, centrifuge operation, etc.)

  • Experience with quantitative genetic data analyses methods (Linkage Mapping, QTL mapping, etc.)

  • Experience with Project Report writing and presentations

  • Experience with working on multiple overlapping research projects

  • Functional understanding of Genomics, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry and Statistics

  • Ability to operate genetic linkage and QTL analysis software (Mapmaker, JoinMap, R, QTL Cartographer, MapQTL)

  • Exposure to basic DNA analysis methods such as BLAST, homolog comparison, primer design, etc.

  • Ability to work with large datasets

  • Ability to work safely and cooperatively as part of a team Practical knowledge and experience working with MS Office

  • Strong communication skills

  • Ability to think critically and analytically in a self-motivated environment

  • Motivation and desire to learn and acquire new skill sets

  • Analytical thinking with practical mindset

  • Accuracy and attention to detail are critical to the functions of this position
