BASF Corporation seeks a Scientist I (Watermelon Molecular Breeding) (West Sacramento, CA): Partner with integrated watermelon breeding programs through analyses and interpretation of genotypic data in defined research projects. Facilitate global watermelon breeding efforts to develop superior varieties by identifying and implementing molecular markers. Develop genetic maps and identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) underlying complex traits. Analyze and interpret genetic variation in natural populations for designing novel breeding schemes. Initiate and execute innovative applied research proposals to implement genome-wide and trait markers to accelerate and improve breeding cycles. Responsible for the execution of MB projects activities to ensure high-quality results within defined time planning and budget. Co-ordinate MB-related activities with multiple involved disciplines, such as breeding, genotyping services, phytopathology, statistics, and bioinformatics. Perform laboratory tasks, such as tissue sampling, DNA extraction, and PCR. Collect, store, and analyze phenotypic data from the field and greenhouses. Keep accurate records, prepare and present research reports to stakeholders. Trains and supervises a lab technician and an intern. 10% of domestic and international travel.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Requires a Master's degree in Genetics, Plant Breeding, Biology, or related fields and 5 years of experience in vegetable seeds industry. Requires 5 years of experience in: genomics, bioinformatics, statistics, and plant breeding; statistical genetics (e.g., mixed linear models and population genetics); QTL analysis software programs, such as JoinMap and MapQTL; large sequencing data analyses using programming language, such as R; ability to generate and implement trait markers in plant breeding programs; molecular genetics techniques, such as DNA extraction, primer design, PCR, qPCR, electrophoresis, and genotyping platforms; ability to initiate, execute, and complete research projects independently in a fast pace environment. Must have evidence of contribution to scientific knowledge in form of publications and patents, and the development of commercial products such as crop varieties.
