Applications Technician Apprentice

As part of BASF’s North American Apprenticeship Development Program (NAADP), apprentices participate in a 2 1/2 year program offering hands-on work experience in BASF’s coatings application while attending community college to earn company paid training in applications technology. While participating in the NAADP, apprentices will be offered paid tuition, wages, and access to benefits. After the successful completion of the NAADP, apprentices will have training in applications technology and received on the job training directly related to the BASF Applications Technician role.

Applications Technician Apprentice – Whitehouse, OH

Formula for Success: You Will…

Position Description:

In this position the apprentice will learn how to provide coatings application support to the laboratory functions (Development and Technical Service) to ensure that NLR products comply with all applicable application requirements and specifications and develop application information that can be provided to the customer/sales staff. This includes the evaluation of new products, as well as supporting the existing product portfolio of BASF Refinish coatings products. The apprentice will learn how to provide field support in the area of product application to the various field sales functions. Receives explicit instructions covering assigned tasks. Confers with supervisor regularly on assigned tasks. Apprentice will build the skills required to use of computers and databases. Apprentices will learn to interact with sales, marketing, and technical personnel during various stages of product design and life span. Apprentices will learn to interface with customers to respond to technical questions and problems involving the application of refinish products, resulting in occasional trips to the field to assist the sales staff. Apprentices will also learn to deal with equipment manufacturers on a as needed basis.

Apprentices will report to the Applications Manager who, along with the assigned sites’ staff, will support the Apprentice throughout the NAADP.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Prepare auto parts prior to coating application. Spray application of existing BASF products, so as to identify possible problems or areas of improvement. Give feedback to the laboratory to guide existing product portfolio maintenance.

  • Assist in the preparation of technical information as it relates to new products, or present product recommendations to aid field sales and our customers in the proper use of BASF coatings products.

  • Hand-spray application of a new laboratory development product on a properly prepared car part or car body, so as to provide useful information on application characteristics, to help guide the development of the new product.

  • Remain current with new hand spraying application equipment

  • Receive sales rep. Phone calls, so as to assist in resolving application related product problems or inquiries.

  • Be knowledgeable of, and be able to carry out, basic spray-booth maintenance, e.g., changing booth filters, balancing airflow, cleaning and interior floor resurfacing.

  • Participates in department teams.


  • Adhere to established safety, health and environmental policies and procedures.

  • Participate in incident investigations.

  • Accomplish day-to-day and recurring EHS activities

  • Safety suggestions

  • Proactive hazard recognition and EHS issues

  • Attend and participate in Safety meetings

  • Waste management activities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school Diploma or GED (those not possessing a Diploma or GED will be required to obtain one (with tuition assistance available from BASF) before moving to any other role at BASF)
