BASF is currently building a new Verbund site in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province. Announced in July 2018 and officially commenced in November 2019, BASF Guangdong Verbund site project would be BASF's largest investment with up to US$10 billion upon completion and would be operated under the sole responsibility of BASF. The site would ultimately be the third-largest BASF site worldwide, and will be built into a role model for smart manufacturing and sustainable production by utilizing the latest digital technologies and applying the highest safety standards.

The new smart Verbund site will include a steam cracker with a capacity of 1 million metric tons of ethylene per year and downstream plants for consumer-oriented products. By utilizing the latest digital technologies and applying the highest safety standards, the site will be built into a role model for smart manufacturing and sustainable production.

What you can expect

  • You will be primarily responsible for supporting the planning and optimization of the BASF Zhanjiang Verbund Site Project.

  • With the goal to continuously improve production plants and site planning by leveraging digitalization, you will support the realization of the Production AI scope and ensure all solutions deployed are highly reliable and adhere to all applicable internal requirements and external/government requirements.

  • Furthermore you develop predictive models that help to improve decision support with respect to transparency, reliability, quality, throughput, safety, and sustainability for our internal customers operating production plants and sites.

  • With a focus on innovation and sustainability, you will use your expertise and familiarity in advanced mathematical modeling techniques in the field of predictive analytics to ensure developed and deployed solutions are both quality and cost competitive.

  • You will work in partnership with the Global Digital Services, AI expert communities and BASF Zhanjiang Verbund Site Project teams to execute pre-studies related to chemical process and value chain analyses, and new technology driven use cases.

What we expect

  • Master's degree or Phd. in computer science, engineering, mathematics, statistics, natural sciences or information technology

  • Experience in Machine Learning, network modeling and agent-based simulation approaches, preferably in the chemical and energy sectors and experience with one or more SQL technology (e.g. mySQL, Spark SQL)

  • Experience developing software code in one or more programming languages (e.g. Python)

  • Knowledge in the development of software solutions preferably of cloud-based applications including CI/CD techniques

  • Ideally working experience in agile methodologies (e.g. Scrum) and frontend development

  • Creative and motivated working style with a strong focus on innovation as well as excellent communication skills which define you as an effective team player
